Black Broad Bellflower Good for Health
Black broad bellflower and foods made with its concentrated solution, namely tea, honey and juice mixed with Schizandra or matrimony vine fruit juice, attracted the attention of visitors at the 17th Pyongyang Autumn International Trade Fair held last year. They were presented by the Moranbong Ragwon Light Industrial Goods Manufactory of the Ryuhung Trading Company.
Kim Hye Ok, the key developer of the goods, said: Broad bellflower can turn black in colour in the course of processing through fermentation and aging. Black broad bellflower thus obtained is a natural functional foodstuff.
The developers made black broad bellflower by processing ordinary broad bellflowers collected from the country’s celebrated mountains like Kumgang by biological and traditional Koryo medicine preparation methods. Black broad bellflower is over 10 times higher in saponin content than ordinary broad bellflower and contains a lot of bioactive substances. It is very good for health and peculiar in taste.
It was patented by the DPRK in 2023 and its preparation method was highly appreciated at the 37th Pyongyang Municipal Sci-tech Festival held in 2024.
The goods made with it were highly appreciated at the exhibitions held in Vladivostok, Russia, in 2024 and 2025.
