Advanced Operation Methods Introduced

A research team of the Neurosurgical Department of Clinical Faculty No. 2 of Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences has recently developed advanced operation methods in the field of neurosurgery.

One of them is the surgical method of hypophysoma by endoscopic nasal approach.

Conventional hypophysoma operation has been performed by removing tumour after cutting off the skull. However, the department developed the microsurgical method to extract the tumour by inserting endoscope through nose. “Key to the new method is to take the endoscope accurately to hypophysoma and then remove the tumour, and the department has managed to address this technical challenge and achieved good results in operation,” department head Kim Yong Dok says.

In addition, Ri Ro Bong, a section chief, and his research team completed the advanced operation method to remove the root cause of the trigeminal neuralgia on the basis of a deep study of the pathological correlation of the disease which usually develops when the trigeminal nerve is connected with artery. This method proved to be highly effective in clinical practice as the nerves can be separated from the artery by using endoscope without damaging the skull.

Besides, the department has developed several other advanced operation methods including microscopic cervical spondylosis operation.

These operation methods are recognized worldwide as advanced neurosurgical operation techniques. At present many patients who were suffering from trigeminal neuralgia and endocrine disorders such as failing eyesight, hypogalactia, infertility, acromegaly and gigantism caused by hypophysoma benefit from these advanced techniques.
